Shopping for a new car can be stressful, one reason why it's important to narrow down your options as much as possible before you arrive at the dealership lot. First and foremost, you should figure out which vehicle body style is right for you. Among the most popular are sedans and SUVs, though there are important distinctions to make between these two styles. Drivers who need more space and better capabilities may want an SUV; however, sedans are often more affordable and fuel efficient.

Pros of SUVs

SUVs have become more common in recent years, in part because of low fuel costs and a demand for better capabilities. SUVs are more often than not larger than sedans, as most come with a tall ride height and wide stance for clearing obstacles, available 4x4 powertrains, and plenty of cargo space. Models like the Ford Explorer, Ford Escape, Lincoln Navigator, MKX, Aviator, and Cadillac Escalade offer plenty of capabilities and bold design features.

Cons of SUVs

However, SUVs can sometimes be more expensive than sedans, and they also tend to get lower gas mileage. While fuel prices have been low in recent years, there's no guarantee that they will stay that way. Plus, many SUVs are larger and slightly more difficult to navigate in big cities, especially if you're parallel parking or looking for a spot in a parking garage.

Pros of Sedans

Sedans are any four-door model on the market, like the Ford Focus and Lincoln Continental, to name just two great models. Sedans come with lower sticker prices than most SUVs, and they also tend to have better fuel economy. Sub-compact sedans, like the Ford Fiesta, are great for cutting back on fuel costs and for squeezing into tight parking spots, too. Plus, many sedans seat five people comfortably, which is comparable to many compact SUVs.

Cons of Sedans

Sedans have less overall space than SUVS, and many find sedans to be less athletic than SUVs. Most sedans are better equipped for the highway than off-road trails, and, if you prefer to sit higher up as you drive, an SUV may be more comfortable than a sedan.

You can find plenty of new or used SUVs and sedans here at Mike Raisor Auto Group in Lafayette, IN.
